Existing site patterns are a repository of meaning; there are clues within this complexity both in presence and purpose. By celebrating and building upon the patterns of each place, rather than manipulating them, a true sense of belonging in the landscape is revealed. Her passion for artistic exploration and a love for the environment inspire her to create landscapes that are sympathetic with the existing natural environment. Our path of design discovery is deeply rooted in existing site patterns that inform contextual, livable landscapes that connect people with nature. Living and working in Southern California, artist/designer Laura Morton, FAPLD, creates gardens and outdoor spaces that transcend daily life.

Growing up in suburban northeast Oklahoma on a mixed landscape of forest and tallgrass prairie, his interest in landscape architecture stems from time spent at the interface of the built and natural worlds. His work aims to use diverse native plant communities and regional materials to generate a designed landscape that connects everyday life with local ecology. David came to Ground Studio in 2006 with 15 years of experience designing and constructing award winning landscapes in California. His extensive field experience along with a refined design sensibility for planting design in California has made him a vital leader in uniting studio and field work.
Ben’s work is marked by a sensitivity to materiality with an instinct for bringing site and detail together as a whole. Informed by a poetic and restrained design ethos, Ben is a licensed Landscape Architect and holds an MLA degree from Texas A&M University, as well as a BFA in Sculpture from the University of North Texas. In practice, the geographical diversity of his educational and work experiences cultivated a deep appreciation for California’s unique regional qualities and culture. “Whilst traveling I soon discovered my favorite art, architecture and landscapes are deeply connected to the place from which they have ‘grown’ ”. This simple observation and a keen awareness of the regional context inform every design project.
During and after his time at Cal Poly Braden travelled and studied throughout Europe and lived in a hilltop town in Tuscany, Italy. His keen interest in diverse sustainable design methods and practices resonates through his design work. Johnson joined the Monterey office in 2019, coming from Nashville, Tennessee, where he began his career in horticulture and landscape design.
Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to found Clutch Businesses, focusing on building automated, self-sustaining e-commerce businesses for women entrepreneurs. A sociology and philosophy graduate from the University of Minnesota Duluth, Angie’s journey into the business world was serendipitous. Her initial aspiration to create empowering programs for women and underserved groups took a turn when she joined the retail giant, Target Corporation. Angie’s experience at Target, where she immersed herself in various operational roles, laid the groundwork for her profound understanding of business dynamics. With a Bachelor’s Degree from California State University, Monterey Bay, Brenda joined Ground Studio in the winter of 2022 after working in the non-profit legal aid field for two years.
A good, sustainable landscape collaborates with nature, rather than against it, and thrives with little or no human intervention. A key focus of building beautiful and eco-friendly outdoor environments is to reduce the number of resources required to maintain it. Heritage conservation landscape architecture includes habitat restoration, site preservation, and conservation planning. Green space design, ecological design, coastal and offshore projects, and natural parks are all good examples of this aspect of construction architecture.
As the Studio Director of our Santa Barbara office, he continues to infuse the Ground Studio philosophy in our Southern California projects. Communicating our intent from concept to construction documentation is critical, so that the design vision is carried out in every way, from large scale gestures to details experienced in everyday living.
