UCLA Extension offers a Digital Design Suite for Architects & Interior Designers Specialization as well as a variety of individual open-enrollment courses for professional development with our roster of distinguished instructors. The Master of Interior Architecture (MIA), a joint program offered collaboratively between UCLA Extension and Cal Poly Pomona, is the only CIDA-accredited Master of Interior Architecture Program in the nation that can be pursued on a part-time basis.

Always dreamed of becoming an interior designer, or looking to take your design career to the next level? “Certified Interior Designer” or “CID” is the only legally recognized and protected title for interior designers in the state of California. While it is possible to work as an interior decorator without formal training, you cannot use the title “interior designer in California unless you are a registered with the California Council for Interior Design Certification (CCIDC). Interior design AutoCAD classes teach you how to use AutoCAD programs to create precise 2D and 3D drawings, floor plans, and models for interior spaces. The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design is comprised of 132 semester units. The program provides a framework within which students can fully immerse themselves in a critical examination of then social, cultural, and environmental awareness while giving visual form to their investigations. It supports opportunities for employment in the practice of Interior Design; in addition it helps prepare those who are interested in continuing on with a Masters degree or wish to pursue teaching. A diverse curriculum of lecture and studio courses develops the student's cognitive ability to analyze design challenges of a complex nature. Issues of graphic communication, project analysis, programming, space planning, design and selection of interior components are presented in a logical sequence.

Instruction emphasizes the three-dimensional possibilities of sculpting interior space, from conceptual ideas. The courses include lectures, demonstrations, and critiques of works-in-progress. Professional designers and educators from outside the department visit regularly to lecture and review student projects. The interior design program leading to the Master of Interior Architecture (M. INT. ARCH.) degree is fully accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA). Considered to be the highest level of accreditation within the field of interior design education, CIDA’s academic standards prepare students for entry-level interior design practice, and to apply for membership in professional interior design organizations. The Master of Interior Architecture degree granted by California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and UCLA Extension meets the educational requirement for eligibility to sit for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification Examination (NCIDQ Exam).

Candidates who meet both the Education and/or work experience requirements and have successfully passed one of the qualifying National Interior Design Exams, at the time of application, will be eligible to complete the certification process upon successful completion of the IDEX® California Exam.
